Abstract

Composite resins have advantages such as excellent esthetics, appropriate strength and relatively inexpensive price. However, observable discolorations of composite resins during the polymerization process would influenc e the ac curac y of c linical shade matc hing. This s tudy aimed to evaluate the c olor c hanges o f two brands of domestic (DenFil and CharmFil plus) and two brands of foreign composite resins before and after polymerization. Color of composite resin specimens (12 mm in diameter and 1mm in thickness) was measured with a spectrophotometer over white and black backgrounds before and after polymerization, and translucency parameter (TP) was calculated. The changes in color (¥ÄE*ab) and color coordinates (¥ÄL*, ¥Äa* and ¥Äb*) were calculated and analyzed with one-way ANOVA and scheffe¡¯s multiple range test (¥á=0.05). After polymerization, DenFil showed a decrease of both CIE a* and b* values (-0.1 to -6.7) while CharmFil plus showed a significant decrease of CIEb* value (-5.5 to -8.2). ¥ÄE*ab values of the investigated composite resins were increased in the order of foreign brands, DenFil and CharmFil plus (p<0.05). All the composite resins showed increased TP values after polymerization. Therefore, the color change by polymerization of composite resins, especially the domestic composite resins, should be improved for successful and esthetic shade matching.
